This four-part series has seen conductor Sir Antonio Pappano explore the main opera voice types and what it is that defines them, focusing on some of the greatest singers of the past 100 years. In the concluding part, Pappano takes a look at the lowest vocal registers: the baritone and the bass. Featuring recorded performances by the likes of bass-baritone Bryn Terfel and basses John Tomlinson and Ferruccio Furlanetto, the conductor delves deep into the world of the lower voice types. He meets some Russian `oktavists' (who are able to sing a whole octave lower than the standard bass) and explores the endless variety of roles that the baritone voice type offers within opera.
